Online alarm clock for 12:59 am

As you finish your watch at the little penguin colony and prepare to leave, set the alarm for 12:59 am so the handover does not drift past 1:00 am. That final minute is enough to check that the next person is settled, gather your torch and notes, and step away quietly without disturbing birds returning ashore.

Your departure may call for a gentler signal than an ordinary wake-up alarm. Choose a soft tone if other volunteers or nearby penguins could be unsettled, but use a more persistent sound if wind, surf or tiredness might mask a single chime. Keep the volume high enough to hear through outdoor layers, then test it before relying on it. If the browser stops running or the phone goes to sleep, no sound will mark the end of your penguin watch, so use a separate alarm when missing the handover would leave the colony unattended.

After a late-night shift beside the water, pack a small drink and a simple snack that can be finished before 12:59 am without leaving crumbs near the colony. Save a full meal and hot drink for somewhere away from the viewing area once the watch is over. This keeps packing quick at 1:00 am and avoids juggling open food, field notes and gear while you are handing responsibility to the next watcher.
