Going to bed for a 3:21 am alarm

  • Asleep by 6:06 pm — 6 full sleep cycles, about 9 hours
  • Asleep by 7:36 pm — 5 full sleep cycles, about 7 hours
  • Asleep by 9:06 pm — 4 full sleep cycles, about 6 hours

A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take around 15 minutes to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle feels easier than waking in the middle of one.

Online alarm clock for 3:21 am

While aligning the mount and checking the finder at Tekapo, set the 3:21 am alarm as the point when you must stop what you’re doing and step away. It creates a clear boundary before 4:00 am, whether you need to change an eyepiece, note the conditions, or begin the next part of your observing plan.

Keep the alarm page open while you finish preparing the telescope, and raise the alarm volume enough to hear it from your position outside. Check that silent mode, Do Not Disturb, or muted browser audio will not suppress the sound. If you close the browser or allow the phone to sleep, the alarm cannot pull you away from the telescope setup, so use a separate alarm if missing 3:21 am would disrupt the session.

Before returning to the eyepiece, prepare the surrounding light for the 3:21 am interruption. Dim the screen, cover bright status LEDs, and place a red-light torch where you can reach it without searching. At this hour, even a brief white glow from a phone or car interior can interfere with the dark setting around Lake Tekapo, so make those adjustments before the alarm sounds.
