Going to bed for a 4:30 am alarm

  • Asleep by 7:15 pm — 6 full sleep cycles, about 9 hours
  • Asleep by 8:45 pm — 5 full sleep cycles, about 7 hours
  • Asleep by 10:15 pm — 4 full sleep cycles, about 6 hours

A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take around 15 minutes to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle feels easier than waking in the middle of one.

Online alarm clock for 4:30 am

You are only just waking at 4:30 am, with the little-penguin colony handover still ahead of you. That leaves enough time to get dressed, gather your torch and warm layers, and reach the watch before 5:00 am without turning the start of the night shift into a rush.

Because this alarm runs in your browser, closing the page or browser ends its chance to sound; it may also stay silent if your phone or laptop goes to sleep, leaving the penguin watch without its expected relief. Keep the alarm page open and the device awake, check that the volume is audible, and use a separate alarm if missing the handover would leave another volunteer waiting.

After an early colony shift, any sleep still available can disappear into small jobs once you return home. Before leaving at 4:30 am, set out what you will need for bed, keep the room dark, and choose a later wake-up time that fits the rest of your morning. This makes the remaining sleep a planned part of the night rather than an uncertain gap after the handover.
